Cold start problem.

Post by M60 tanker » Mon Dec 05, 2022 5:27 pm

I have a 1952 M38A1 Jeep. I am having a hard time with it starting when it's cold. It has Solex carburetor on it. It has a fuel pressure regulator set at 2psi. It is flooding. But as soon as it gets running you can't ask for a better running engine.

I have exactly the same setup, pressure reg and all, on a Navy 1948 CJ2A; I gave up on it because it is a solex, known for problems. I just hit it with two sprays of starting fluid after it has sat for a couple of days/weeks. From then on out, it starts fine for the rest of the day. I have too many vehicles to worry about one small problem child.

If you are pumping the gas pedal to prime for a start then you are flooding it.

That is absolutely right; Solex's are not really carburetors as we know them; they are aluminum cans with holes in the bottom. I have like 5 of them. On the shelf.
