Change in Oil pump Design

Post by delta31 » Mon Aug 22, 2022 8:02 am

Just curious as I just replaced my original oil pump on my F134 engine with a Melling M53.
The original oil pump I took off had the relief valve in the base and the cover plate is flat.
The new Melling has the valve cost into the the cover.

Is this design been around for a while? Anyone know why the change was made?

I have read reference to a "van" oil pump, is that referring to the one with the relief valve in the base?

Thanks
