M38A1 Fording Video in Lake !!!

Post by 70th Division » Wed Sep 01, 2021 12:59 pm

Hello,

I wanted to share this outstanding video found on YouTube , of a like new restored M38A1 driving submerged.

This video is an outstanding presentation of the use of a snorkel kit, on a jeep during a "Water Landing "

Very entertaining, and well worth viewing.

Best Regards
Ray

Ray
Back in the late 1970s, I saw a story in a 4 wheel drive magazine ( sorry I do not remember the name....their was many back then). The story was about a jeep club in Florida that had M38A1s. They would drive them into the ever glades and under water must of the time. I am going back a lot of years on a story I read, but I do remember two pictures from the story. One showed the back of the jeep, and the ice chest was floating!, the second photo was of the tires, they were the standard issue stock military tires!!!. The club members said in the story the military tires out preformed all the tires they had tried!

Hi Frank,

The good old days !! 😃😃,

Now they would have to deal with not only gators and snakes and swamp creatures, but now they would have to watch out the big pythons in there !!

Sounds like an interesting article !!

This M38A1 jeep is over in Europe somewhere, but she really is a beauty, and looks like a high level restoration.

Best Regards,
Ray

Yes, very nice.....thanks! Lots of special effort and expertise on display where ever it is.

Over here in my neck of the woods the Game Warden would probably be all over him for polluting the water and running over the submerged wildlife without a permit.

Either that, or ticket him for operating a leaky boat without a life jacket.....

I wonder if the engine would leak oil after continually pressurizing the block. Probably stated in manual when to exactly push in the fording handle though. Life expectancy for these jeeps was not 70 plus years but maybe a short while so really didn’t matter I guess
Thanks for sharing really neat. John

Cool video, I'd love to see a tour of the engine compartment.
