Tow Bar Options

Post by ndnile » Wed Mar 31, 2021 8:07 pm

I think within the last two years I stumbled upon a thread here where the poster described modifying an off the shelf folding tow bar to install on the front shackle brackets on an M38A1. I did a search here, but could not find it. Any pointers?

Looks pretty good, but I'm really wanting something I can fold up and get out of the way when I don't need it. I have an M170 and will tend to store it in the back instead of keeping it mounted on the bumper all the time.

Yes, I have done this.

I purchased an off-the-shelf tow bar for towing my M38A1. I believe it is a Curt Manufacturing tow bar....not sure as there is no manufacturers information on the bar.

The width of the connector (below) is 2" wide. It fits perfectly into the front lifting shackle bracket of the jeep with no slop.

Out of the box, the connector hole was too narrow to accept the 3/4" diameter of the shackle pin. So, I drilled it out to 3/4" diameter,

Now it all fits perfectly and hook up is fast and efficient. When I get to the parade I remove the shackle pins, pull off the tow bar, and replace the shackle rings and pins. I am ready to go!

Let me know if you have any questions.
