Jerrycan holder serial number

Post by Fmbruce » Fri Jan 22, 2021 7:16 am

I am restoring my 1953 USAF M38A1 and have just had a pile of parts blasted and primed. On another jeep I owned, the jerrycan holder had USMC stamped into the metal, so when I got this one back from the blasters, out of curiosity I looked to see if it had anything stamped on it. There is a serial number on the narrow outer face at the bottom of the holder 42-B-22590. I've never seen this before. Has anybody any clue what this means? Thanks, Bruce

I believe the USMC on the jerrycan holder stands for the manufacture and not the Marine Corps. I have a unit marked similar. When I found it I thought it was for the Corps, but later ran across info counter to this assumption.

That is not a serial number; it is a part number used in WW2; and USMC is US Metal Corp or Company. Post war gas can carriers are usually unmarked. Not sure when the marked ones went out but my M38 had one on it; no way to tell if it was the original one.

Go to the link on my post within that link and I show the title of the bracket drawing with your model jeep! The drawing also has that number stamped if I remember correctly!

Oh, as noted USMC in this context is US Metal Container (Can).

Mark,

Good to see someone is still making good use of your dedicated research.
