All this may be a stupid question but is the M38A1 Chassis longer than a CJ3B? I know the the Axle to Axle is different. 80" compared to 81" for an M38A1. I was wondering if the chassis (frame) is longer for the M38A1?
Thank you for any input!
Kyle

Re: M38A1 Chassis
I was checking the Willys service manual
CJ3b is 122 & 21/32”
CJ5, M38A1 is 128 & 7/16”
You should use a early CJ 5 1950s to early 60s frame or a M38A1 frame.

The 3B frame is basically the same as previous jeeps; starting with the M38A1/Cj5; it is as stated above; longer and different.
Come over and I will show you some.

Re: M38A1 Chassis
The CJ-3A/CJ-3B Chasis are a close match, CJ-2A is lighter ga. Steel. CJ-5/M-38A1 Frame is longer, uses longer springs, arches between spring hangers are longer.
Best stick to finding the correct frame or you will have spring bracket issues, along with transmission cross member and clutch/brake pedal pivot probs along with front engine mounting probs.
You can't say you were not warned.

Re: M38A1 Chassis
I need to get on this forum more often!! I appreciate your input. I happened into a M38A1 rolling chassis although I didnt know at the time what I had. I bought it because there was a L head motor, T-90 trans and a D18 installed. The engine, trans and T-case were used on another project. I want to build a 3B when I am finished with my current project and though it would work as a 3B chassis. I will heed your advice and thanks! I will sell the chassis and start looking for a 3B.
Thanks again!
