Clutch and Brake Pedal Cross Shaft Stuck

Post by Rickyjmg » Thu May 28, 2020 3:52 am

Good Morning!

Im currently in the process of working the engine of my recently acquired M38A1. I got a battery, started it, and the motor sounds good for now. I want to be able to move the jeep around and run it but the clutch and brake pedal cross shaft is stock and they both move together. I started to take everything apart but was having issues even removing the clutch pedal from the arm to get everything out. See pictures below and a diagram showing where the brake pedal is actually stuck (frozen) to the cross shaft. Let me know your recommendations on what to do.

Im thinking, to take everything apart I will need to remove that muffler (retrofit) junction.

Let me know!

Clutch and Brake Pedal Cross Shaft Stuck

Post by jnissen » Sun May 31, 2020 10:53 am

That area is tight to work on. If they truly are frozen together I’d try the application of some heat, a BFH, and plenty of penetrating. Removing the pedals will hopefully not be too difficult. Our 1955 fought us every step of the way. Eventually just removed the whole tub since we were doing a frame up restore. Once tub is off it’s easy peezy!

Hopefully you have a oxy-acc torch to help with stubborn bolts. We selectively had to resort to the blue wrench when it was clear the bolts were toast.

Hey Jim! I replied to you on the other thread.. but figured this was the actual topic thread later.. See below picture of the actual cross shaft parts.

I had to remove the cross shaft support from the chassis to be able to bring the whole thing down and work on the brake arm separately. It was bad..After a couple of bangs and some penetrant, it came out.

Now the question is if I need to get a new cross shaft or if I can sand it and clean it.. with some grease if will work just fine. Also, thinking about installing a new master cylinder for the brakes now that all that is out of the way. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

Good Evening G503 community,

I was able to clean the cross shaft and found a groove where the brake arm is supposed to go. Do you all know if this is ok to be reused like that? The brake arm fits well in there and with grease should turn fine. See pictures below:

Your A-495 Shaft is worn, note the pitting next to the grooved area. The 801662 Bracket w/bushing should be available from Ron.
It will eliminate excess pedal side play .

Good Morning Everybody... I wanted to let all of you that helped with your comments what I ended up doing...

I ended up replacing the cross shaft with a new one and re-installing all back together, cleaned up bolts, painted parts, etc..

See picture below:

Now clutch it doing great... I was able to move the jeep back and forth... slowly cause of course.. I have no breaks!
That will be the next step. Replacing the cylinders and brake pads.

Thanks,

Looks great. The brakes are not to bad. Helps if you have a few tools and an hydraulic press if any of the bearing races need replacement.

We found a lot is brake hardware that was called out as common on CJ5s and M38A1s were not accurate. Incorrect length retainer pins come to mind.
