M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
Ok here we go again. I have a 1952 M38a1 with the hinged grill. I had David Delight restore a M38a1 body for me and it was I think a 54 or 55 because it didn't have the hinged grill. I put it on my 52 frame and when I took my grill with the hinges it wouldn't line up with the bolt holes in the frame. It was about 1/4 inch too long. The body fits perfect. I don't have my original fenders that bolt to the frame but I thought they were all the same size. Also when I put the grill on that bolts to the frame in the center it is about 1/4 inch from the frame. Does that mean the fenders on the 54-55 body is too long or what. I need some help because I have tried just about everything. I could just get two different hinges and then weld the holes shut and drill me some new holes to fit the frame but I need to know why I have to do that instead of the original fitting. Need help on this one too.

Re: M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
Early frames require early fenders that have the exposed seam as they have brackets that attach to frame. late body has a Grill bracket with a rubber cushion that the bottom of the late grill mounts to. The late fenders are same dimension but do not have yje brackets that attach to the frame. The late body has two tie rods from the firewall to the top of the late grill. There is a third type late fender that has the cover plates over the seam and also has brackets thatgo to frame, they are made to fit all M-38A1 set ups.
Late frame in addition to the center grill bracket, is drilled and tapped for hinged grill. Early frame has no center grill bracket.
One more thing, early tub does not have tie bar brackets welded to cowl as the late body had not been utilized till 1953. Take your TM and study grill, fender, and engine compartment details and instructions.
Early frame must use early fenders. late frame can use either.

Re: M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
So if I have a 1952 m38a1 frame and took the body off and replaced it with a 54 or 55 or 56 body then even though the fenders don't have the extended braces I the grill won't line up with the holes in the frame so I can put hinges on it.

Re: M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
Just to make myself clear so as no confusion on my part I know about the seams on the early m38a1 fenders and about the braces both on the fenders and coming off of the firewall to the grill. The only thing I don't understand is why when I try to put my hinged grill from my 52 on to the fenders from a 53 or 54 or 55 it doesn't line up for the hinges to be bolted to the frame. If I find a pair of original fenders with the braces from a 52 will my 52 grill line up then to the bolt holes on the front top of frame?

Can you post a pic of the fenders that do not fit? If you are attempting to insrall CJ-5 fenders after 1971, they will be 6" too long. Gotta have pics of the problem at the grill.

It won't let me. The fenders and body are original m38a1 54 to 58. I need to get back to 52 which is year of everything but body.

All versions of M-38A1 Fenders share same mounting holes.

Re: M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
I know everything is the same mounting holes. It should bolt right up. But the fenders on my m38a1 now is original and they are about 1/4 to 1/3 inch longer than they should be. In order for my 1952 grill to fit right those fenders should be 1/4 to 1/3 inch shorter.

I am talking about the length from body to end of fender at the grill.

Re: M38a1 Front Fender Specification 1952
M-38A1 early/late fenders have identical mounting holes, 1955 thru 71 all share those holes. Late frame will accept early or late grill installation.
There are two brackets used on the Frame horns of Jeeps with the hinged grill, they can be swapped onto the late frame in order to mount the early hinged grill.
Just exactly is wrong up front?

Joe send me your email and I will send you the pictures of the fenders and grill on my m38a1 so you can see why the grill hinges don't fit right.
