M38A1 EX Kuwait army
I purchased a M38A1 in Kuwait in 1984 I restored it then and used the car as an escape vehicle during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990. I then moved to Dubai Where I used the car till 1996. I moved to Australia in 1999 bringing the jeep with me I am now restoring it again and am trying to clarify the year of manufacture. The documentation that was issued by the Kuwait authorities say that it is a 1957 year of manufacture I have checked on the Willys serial number list and I cannot find it.

Hi Peer,
check for the chassis number on the left front outer face of the chassis rail just behind the spring shackle. It should start with MD. That number will be one that the experts here can relate to. The number on the patent plate in your picture doesn't seem rtight to me.
Cheers

The Kuwait authorities disposed of 20 units in 1981. I purchased 2 from the buyer in 1984. All serial numbers start with 57038-10. Serial number stamped on the chassis at the spring hanger back of the right hand front spring and above the bump stop on the rear right hand spring.

HI Peter,
have a look on the outward face of the chassis rail (vertical, not horizontal) above the left front spring anchor. If there is no stamping starting with MD then I have no idea.
Cheers

Re: M38A1 EX Kuwait army
Interesting, not surprising that these Jeeps were exported but you would think that they would stay with the standard engine and chassis numbering sequences if only to make identifying parts when buying the parts from the USA.
Anyways, good to see your getting some insights into the year of manufacture.
Cheers

Re: M38A1 EX Kuwait army
I have found another link which would place it as a 1961 manufactured vehicle http://willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php? ... ic&t=10182

Re: M38A1 EX Kuwait army
Hi Peer,
Prefix 57048-10 was used for the 6 volt type M38A1's built for Saudi Arabia.
Serial numbers in 1963 started with serial number 11701
Many of those jeeps (at least 100) were exported from Kuwait to Sweden for civil use.
I just checked the Bilregister (Swedish Car Registry): e.g. M38A1 57048-10 11341 was already registered in 1987 (before the Kuwait crisis)
Prefix 57048-08 was used for the 6 volt type M38A1's built for Egypt
Serial numbers in 1963 started with serial number 11101
Prefix 57048-17 was used for the 12volt type M38A's built for Kuwait
Serial numbers in 1963 started with serial number 10001
Best regards

It is possible that these cars came from Saudi during operation Vantage in 1961 when Iraq threatened Kuwait. Saudi also supported Kuwait to what extent I don't know.
