Rookie question about nuts and bolts

Post by MadRiver1968 » Thu Dec 01, 2016 5:01 am

Howdy all,

I'm a new M38A1 owner. Bought a 1953 that is in strong running condition with a rebuilt drivetrain, is rust free and is about 85% complete. I'm starting to add missing components, and I have a question about fasteners. What are the basic standard nuts and bolts? For example, I'm bolting on the driver's seat, the horn bracket and the fuel filler neck cover/guard. No idea what the basic fastener size is, and what they're made of. I'm kind of a stickler for originality.

Thanks so much!

The ORD9 SNL G-758, Parts manual lists the fasteners used to bolt the Jeep components in place.
Jeep used a lot of special pattern bolts w/raised edges on the heads along with bolt and screw combinations with attached split, ext. tooth and Int. tooth attached washers made by SEMs that were Jeep Spec. and more or less not obtainable 60 years later.

If you go over to the Willys M Jeeps site, www.willysmjeeps.com log in and check in the "Downloads" section you will find almost all the TM's for your vehicle including parts and maintenance manuals. You can view the manuals on-line or download them to your computer - all for free. The Downloads section link is at the top of the page. Also, you will also find a huge amount of other technical info in Downloads plus photos of members vehicles in the "Photo Gallery". Worth the visit!

Salvage 1955-1971 GJ-5 Jeeps are good source of M-38A1 pattern bolts and screws.
