CHANGING TIRES

Post by Joe Gopan » Mon Mar 28, 2016 7:01 pm

Not all Army motor Pools had tire changing machines, I used to change M-38/M-38A1 Tires by hand using tire irons and tire hammer. Ever notice the different brand name 700 X 16 NDCC that were available for M-38 and M-3Aa1 in the 50's 60's. Here's a few. Goodyear, Kelly Springfield, BF Goodrich, Firestone, Remington, Mansfield, Mohawk, Cooper, Pennsylvania, Sieberling, and U.S. Royal. I might have missed a few. I do remember LEE Tires but only saw them on the 1100 X 20 Tires on 75MM Skysweepers. If you were lucky to have witnessed 50-53 M-38/M-38A1 Jeeps with their original factory installed tires, you would have noticed they had the Sleeves on the Valve Stems of all 5 Tires. Later M-38A1 Jeeps were not equipped with them.

Our '54 had a mishmash of tires on it -- including a Mohawk and Pennsylvania. I was shocked when I read "Pennsylvania Mud & Snow" on the sidewall. I tried to Google this and came up with zilch. :(

You're only 60 years late on learning M-Series Jeeps. The familarity with the type does not evolve in a hurry. It will take a few years,

And that is why I am reading the TM's and threads on here every chance I get. I learned something new again tonight... :)
