Hi,

I'm having to complete some rewiring on my A1. Nothing too heavy, just replacing some worn cable runs. What size cable is mainly used between the various components?

I'd rather reuse or replace the Douglas connectors but need to know the cable size that they can use.

Thanks for the informative threads

Regards

All the cable sizes and most of the lengths are in your ORD 9 SNL G-758 Parts Manual. If you don't have one just join my http://www.willysmjeeps.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; web site and forums and download it in PDF format there.

I am almost finished with the wiring harness. I had to shelve the project this summer due to life. things are rolling right along. I will post some new photos in a few weeks.

I used to do things in a wire shop where wire harnesses were made for various things. I'm guessing that when the sub contractor made the wiring harnesses for Willys, they would have used this process:

Wires are cut to length and numbered at both ends. A shadow board is used to route the wires along a defined path.

At each end there is a board with various nails. The nails act to route the wires together in a bundle and to mark where certain wires exit the bundle. For example, there would be a board about the width of a jeep representing the rear end of the vehicle that would have nails to route the bundle to each of the two tail lights and the trailer receptacle. The other board has the routes for the horn, brakes, lights and dash. A black wire tie could be used to make the separations from the main bundle.

The center section of the wires, if correctly measured out, should all even up and simply be bundled together.

A person can make the shadow board by using an existing bundle and marking the wire numbers at the various end points.

And, it's just that easy!

Your on it, in a way I am doing just that. I am replacing the old tired military / civilian bubb'd wiring harness piece by piece so to speak. Once I have all the measurements I am going to write them on a wiring diagram so folks here can do exactly what you are talking about with the board and nails. Thanks Yarder for the insight, I guess once you have that info on a board you can just mass produce harnesses then?...

Anybody know?

thanks,
bob

Wow! I had forgotten all about it. I didn't need a harness, so I didn't go forward with it, but was describing how the airplane industry does things.

And yes, once a peg board is all set up, one could certainly mass produce wire harnesses.

Hi Yarder,

I only ask because Duke's last reply said "Once I have all the measurements I am going to write them on a wiring diagram so folks here can do exactly what you are talking about" and he said he'd be posting pics of his completed harness.......but never did. I'm thinking of buying a NOS M170 harness and modifying it for my A1. If I had the info Duke was talking about I could modify the harness out of the vehicle, which would be much easier.

thanks,
bob

I sold the M38A1, the wiring harness project ceased with the sale. What you see is where I stopped. All my documentation and work went with the M38A1.

Bob,
Over on the WillysMJeep forum I posted the wiring measurements for the M38andA1. Take a look there and see if that helps.
