There was a difference in GI Issue replacement mufflers, the ones of the 60's were delicate and the pipe would break loose at the rear of the muffler. Factory OEM's were by MAREMOUNT and possibly WALKER and seemed more durable than the other make GI replacements.

What about exhaust fumes? Fumes will enter the jeep if the tailpipe is not extended into the moving air outside of the jeep's contours, at least that is my experience.

No big problem, thousands of GI's drove M-38 and M-38A1 Jeeps and lived to tell about it. I have over 300,000 miles Jeeps, mostly M-38A1.

Yes, I am sure it is survivable, but wives, girlfriends, kids etc. will not want to ride in the "stinky" jeep. I think we are used to it, but some people can not stand it or get a headache after a while. Even for us it would be better without CO and other stuff.

Your Jeep may need a tune up.

It is tuned perfectly, but it has nothing to do with tune up. Exiting under the jeep will let the low pressure area at the rear of a moving vehicle roll the fumes right back up into the vehicle. No matter how well it is tuned, how many Catalytic Converters are installed, EFI or whatever, the fumes will still be dangerous. That is the reason you are not advised to drive a Station Wagon with open tailgate or you have to clean the rear window often in wet weather on SWs. Civilian jeeps had the pipe end at the rear corner in the airflow at an angle of 45° and turned down. On the civilian market a "Just get used to it" slogan is not good enough.

Muffler is on the agenda for my M38. I've always loved that "zuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-zuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu}" the Willys made. While not all that loud, mine is louder than it should be, and there is little to no "sing" :? . Only when you rev up the engine can you get it to "sing" like it should. It won't be long..................................

Nothing's more annoying than the exhaust reverberating off the bumperette.

This sound effect was common to many M38A1's.
Think twice about installing a Tailpipe Extension, they make a handy step for little urchins tthay want to climb into the Jeep. The curved OEM muffler outlet is not that rugged.
