Rubber Starter Pedal Pad

Post by Joe Gopan » Thu Mar 20, 2008 5:08 pm

They were on there, but the part is not that easy to find in the G-740 and G-758 SNLs..

Early CJ-3A with the plunger thru the floorboard is a possibility, but again, it does not show in the Jeep Parts List. I never noticed one on new Cj-3A and do not remember. It makes sence tho.

I checked this out. They have the pad and the price is only $1.45. The kicker is, they won't mail it. They want $8.00 UPS to ship it! I'd like to get one but I draw the line on overpriced shipping costs. That little rubber pad would fit in a #10 envelope and the postage would be less than $1.00.

You are talking Memphis Equip, I believe. I have done business with them for 40 years, that is how they do their shipping. The branch at Chambersburg may have a simpler method of shipping, but they do not ship by US mail, UPS and truck Freight is it. They offer these on E-bay from time to time. I believe the ones I have bought usually kill $6-$8 by the time it is shipped. Perhaps a group buy is the way to go.

Order six extra to sell to others who need only one and don't want to pay $8.00 shipping. If you sell them for 1.75ea plus $2.00 postage. You recover you your money on shipping and the pad. You'll of coarse be out on the handling to mail the others.

No M-38/M-38A1 should be without one.

I ordered one yesterday from Midwest Military.
$7.50.
They have it listed as a M38A1 part

I didn't see it listed anywhere else, but I figured if they sell it, it must be military!

Yes, one doesn't need it, but I like the idea of it, not being a fan of bare metal pedals...yes I know the accelerator and clutch pedals on M38A1s are bare.
M38A1 MD 82551. Built 3/1955. Purchased in Nov. 2021.
Former owner/restorer of 1977 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade Levis Edition.
All stock w/factory V-8. Used as a daily driver for 7 years.

I have two WO part numbers for this pad
646617
646702
the pad is mentioned in the 1945-49 master parts book (646702) for the cj2a,cj3a, vj,4-63,6-63 models, and the 1949 jeep truck 2 and 4 wheel drive parts book (646617).
Its probably not in later parts books because key starter systems came into being around 1950 i believe.

in the m38 and m38a1 manuals, the starter foot pedal is listed as an assembly. the pad may be part of the assembly and not listed separately, but the photo below of a NOS starter foot pedal doesn't show one.

a well known parts dealer lists the part number as 7539630, but I have no idea where the 7 digit number came from.

Maybe Keith can add to this with a diagram.

If it helps, looking here, https://www.ebay.com/itm/170975471736?h ... xytdlQ9i5g
7539630 appears to be an Ordnance part number and part of a Federal Stock Number (FSN) from a 1969 contract. The packaging isn't marked for G741, but seller says it's a G741 M37 part that also fits M38 and M38A1. I don't have a M37 ORD9 to look it up, but bought one for my M38 and it fits perfect.

Here's a photo of 5620417. It looks different. https://www.ebay.com/itm/334262131620?h ... SwSKtaUBcS

Looks like 7539630 is NSN 2540-00-753-9630, used on M34, M35, M36 2-1/2 ton 6x6 trucks and variants.

Willys part number 642180 is the starter pedal pad in brown instead of black.

Midwest Military has it with a part number of: 7351198.
I don't know if that is their number or a Army number.

They do sell a starter pedal and note that the pad is sold separately.
They seem to think it is correct for a M38A1 since it is listed in that section under electrical parts.

I need to clarify a post i added above. After contact with Keith, he was kind enough to correct me in that the master parts book for 1945-49 does not show the cj2a and cj3a as utilizing this rubber pad. My mistake in not looking close enough.
also, there is not listing of this rubber pad in any m38 or m38a1 manual that we could find. The pad is listed in the m37 parts manual however, and a photo is included below.
