At least in Kansas the VIN used on titles is the serial number stamped on the engine behind the water pump. The number on the plates is of no concern to the state authorities.

Thanks for all the info guys. The auction priced ended up at $7100. :cry: I can't sell it for that amount so I'm going to put a hard top on it and drive it for a while. :idea: :P

The hinged grill ended in late 1953, October I believe. More than likely yours is a 1952 to mid/late 1953 that got a set of data plates "assigned" to it. ;)

Both patent plate and dash plates stamped with same serial number 77064

Willys was really cranking them out in that timeframe.
Mine was produced in March, 1955 and is 82551.
So, based on albix's numbers, I'd guess 77064 would have been 11/54.

I believe there is a serial database online where people give their Willys body/serials and the few known Army hood numbers.
That might enable you to pinpoint a production month.
