Speedometer Repair shop

Post by AFM38A1 » Mon Aug 28, 2023 9:57 am

My speedometer just quit working in my newly restored M38A1.
It's original and I just had a new lens case put on it, so I'd rather repair than replace.

Can anyone recommend a shop?
Preferably, someone with experience with these because of the sealed case and 24v.

Thanks

I ask only because you didn't mention it --- are you sure it's not a broken cable?

Speedo is entirely mechanical, has no voltage, 24v or otherwise.

Good luck!

Still checking, but during recent restoration the cable was checked and lubed, so I'm assuming the worst.

Failing that and finding a repair shop, does anyone know a source for a good 8376375 / SW-503C.
And since I assume everyone here knows more than I, will a later unit (not listed in my manual) work.
Or, does anyone have a early version:7760396/SW503A?

Speaking of Speedometer repair, I was also wondering if there is anyone who can replace the cracked glass in my M38A1's original sealed speedometer.

I had the same problem a year ago.
John at Midwest Military fixed me up with a shop in Oregon who replaced it.
I did not have them do an overhaul, just new plastic.

When my Speedo quit working, I asked him for the contact again, he said the shop is closed.

FYI: As you said, the speedometer is a sealed unit to keep it waterproof.
So the lens is actually a case. Imagine a glass or plastic jar, the face of the instrument is the bottom.
That makes replacing the glass/plastic almost impossible unless you have the correct part. I think the bezel is a one-time use item, so a shop would need a metal bezel as well.
Good luck finding a shop, I only found the one I did out of sheer luck.

SUGGESTION: Look for shops that specialize in vehicles other than Jeeps like M37s.
I don't know for sure, but it's possible gauges on newer MVs might be the same size, so even if the instruments are not interchangeable, the repair lens/case might be.

You may have to buy a new unit...New reproductions are $80 (imported ones are even less but don't seem to have a great reputation on forums), NOS units with the correct original old style (not the later MS) part numbers are $300.

I wanted mine repaired or a correct NOS unit because my Jeep is pretty original, you spend time looking at the gauges and I didn't want to be reminded that mine was not as nice as it could be, and finally, I'm picky...probably too picky to be driving a 68 year old ex-Army Jeep. :)

I'm not sure you could fix your old one for that price.
Try the usual military Jeep shops: MWM, DBJeep, AJP, eBay, etc.

Thanks for the info! If nothing works out, I’ll just put it back in cracked or buy a new one.

Turned out to be a broken cable.
It looked it It was twisted until It broke. At first we thought the Speedo frove, but that was not the case.
It was well lived but it must have gotten bound by something, probably the firewall.

So, I have a spare NOS 503-A if I (or anyone else) needs it.
