Tail light stickout

Post by kenb » Thu Sep 01, 2022 3:00 am

Hello,
I'm working on a M38A1 that had a replacement rear panel at some point. The taillights were installed in a non stock fashion and I need to restore them. My plan is to cut the 5" diameter holes and fabricate support brackets. Can someone please tell me how far the taillights are supposed to protrude from the rear of the tub? Put another way, I need to know how deep to make the support brackets.
Thanks,
Ken

The housing sticks out about 1" from the body (this does not include the lens. Too many places to take measurements off of them).

Several photos in the manuals show them pretty good.

You can buy the entire rear panels with the light brackets already installed. Then you won't have to cut any holes or worry about stick out.

Mine stick out so that the end of the cover plate screw tabs are flush with the rear panel. Thats the rear side of the screw tabs. You can take your tail light bucker and measure from the rear of the tabs to the rear of the bucket or perhaps these pics wwill help.

Either way, it's your jeep, do what you want with it.
