M38A1 front knuckle bearings/king pins

Post by minton » Thu Oct 15, 2020 1:52 pm

Have slop in front D. side tire 6 and 12 o'clock position.
Must be bearing in kunckle...tried to remove just cap but couldn't get to bearings/race.

Removed 3 screws that hold drum and removed manual Lock in/out hubs. Noticed inner and outer axle nuts were removable with my fingers.
Always, on other 4 X 4's, inner snug using axle nut socket and outer snugger...or vice versa.

Problem can't remove brake drum...I know rear drum usually needs a slide hammer puller but don't recall fronts needing one.

Does the rear backing plate on knuckle need to be removed before drum can be slid/pulled off or am I overlooking something?

Thanks

I suggest you buy the set of TM's for your M-38A1 plus the Factory Service Manual for the Universal Jeep.

And how are we to know that?

What was rude about it...is this a help Forum ...I joined in 2015, how many times in the last 5 years have I asked for help?

I made a post needing help and I'm told: I suggest you buy the set of TM's for your M-38A1 plus the Factory Service Manual for the Universal Jeep.

Doesn't address the immediate problem I have. TM I have is: TM9-804A TO 19-75AA-98 went through a fire and some of the pages have darkened from the heat and smoke.

But what difference does that make, if Joe Gopan wants to reply, telling me I need a service manual doesn't address my current issue.

If you want to ban me for that, have at it.

I'm very sorry you feel that way.

If Joe Gopan is omniscient, he would have known I have a manual but I guess he isn't, his response indicated that he must be or he wouldn't have stated' "I need to get one,"w/o asking me if I had one.

Backing off the brakes will certainly help get the drum off. We had a terrible time getting ours off and eventually pulled enough the shoes finally released and it slid off.

Once you get that far the TM’s are fairly good showing disassembled photos and instructions. Holler if you still have problems and we will try to help.
