m38A1 24V 1962 Fuel Tank Sender/Gauge issue

Post by Old Marine » Fri Jul 31, 2020 11:05 am

Have replaced fuel gauge with 24V repo. Gauge pegged at full when ignition on. Replaced sender with new repro (Kaiser Willys). Actual 4 gals in tank. Reads 1/4. Filled tank to the brim. Gauge now reads 1/4. Any suggestions appreciated.

FWIW, I went through the same drill.
Before installing the sender in the tank and the gauge in the instrument cluster, did you hook up everything (with good grounding) and test the sender and gauge? You should get expected readings when moving the sender float through it's range of motion and there should be a smooth movement of the needle - not jumping around.
If that all works as expected, double check that you've got the correct orientation/rotation on the sending unit when you install it so it's not hanging up on anything in the tank.
If your still having an issue, bourbon helps.

As it turns out, my repro gauge was the culprit. Various schools of thought but it seems to be the consenus that repro gauges are always suspect.

Ditto on what Gene said, but I'll add that you should make sure you ground the sender before doing this test. Either by holding it against metal or running a jumper wire to it.
