New M38A1 - Year with Serial?

Post by Rickyjmg » Thu May 21, 2020 5:10 am

Good Morning!

I appreciate the opportunity to be part of this page and group. I have previously restored a 1971 CJ5.

I recently bought an M38A1 that was sold to me as a 1962 Willys. The plates on the dashboard don't match as it is an M170 serial (See picture below). The plate behind the passenger seat looks accurate with an MD serial MD-843XX. I also checked the serial number on the motor and its MD 106305.

Can any of you all help me figure out the year of this M38A1?

Thanks!

Rick

Serial number 84000 is like 1955, and the engine number 100K is probably original. Do not believe any titles for old vehicles; guys swapped them at will back then, and now.

Hello Ricky,

Welcome to the G !!!!

That jeep looks like a great restoration candidate of an important piece of
American Military history !!
You likely can find the original USA /or US Army hood numbers on the sides of your hood.
It looks like it has been well taken care of over the years.

I recently became the owner of a 1953 M38A1 and I am looking forward to getting it running soon.
WeeBee Webbing makes new original spec canvas tops for your jeep here in America, their
quality and prices are unsurpassed and I highly recommend them, when you get a new top.
I just received a box from them with an M38A1 top and 2 additional MB/GPW tops.

The parts are available to get your jeep restored, and many parts are on ebay and
Ron F should have many M38A1 parts as well !

Keep us posted with your beautiful jeep as you get along with your restoration.
Your other jeep looks beautiful as well, great job on the restoration !!

Best Regards,
Ray
