Engine Stay Cable

Post by KiwiMB » Wed Nov 14, 2018 6:32 pm

Hi folks,
wondering if the M-38A1 has a clutch stay cable from the transmission cross member to the flywheel (bell) housing like the MB? I note there is provision for one on my cross member but no corresponding bracket on the flywheel housing plate. I could not find mention of such a cable in the master parts manual SNL G-758

Thanks

The M38, M38A1 and M170 do indeed utilize an Engine Stay Cable. Unlike the MB/GPW, which has a bracket extending from the bell housing plate, these later vehicle's Engine Stay Cables use the lower bell housing bolt hole as the attachment point.

Thanks Peer,
I assume nut and lock nut on the threaded end with the cable just taught?

I would suggest one nut on the cable side of gearbox and second nut on engine side locking the threaded part and then slight tension.

Check the TM and the Parts manual for the nuts.
2 Each 3/8" Nuts with attached external tooth Lock Washers. You can use split lock washers tho.

Picture shows clutch cable is also missing nut at adjusting yoke. The nut is needed to lock the clutch cable to the adjusting yoke.

I may still have a couple of those special nuts w/ext tooth washers I can send if you are a purist. CJ-3B with late starter (used late Bellhousing with ame dimensions as M-38A1, there are minor cosmetic features on the Civ bellhousing that we do not have to mention.

I use these same nuts on Jeep Choke and Throttle cables.

Hi Ian,

A little to late to answer but yup my 67 M38A1 has that cable as well....the exhaust pipe passes right by the rear stay/frame. Again, that's for all your help!
