Joachim Peiper

Post by Milmart » Sun Jun 06, 2021 2:02 am

Joachim Peiper (30 January 1915 – 14 July 1976), also known as Jochen Peiper, was a German SS-Obersturmbannführer and convicted war criminal who was responsible for the 1944 Malmedy massacre of American prisoners of war. During World War II in Europe he served as personal adjutant to Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, between September 1939 and September/October 1941, and thereafter as a Waffen-SS commander.

During his career with Himmler, Peiper witnessed implementation of SS policies of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Eastern Europe; he persistently denied or obfuscated this fact following the war. Transferred to a combat role, Peiper served in the SS Division Leibstandarte on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, commanding first a battalion and then a regiment. He fought in the Third Battle of Kharkov and in the Battle of the Bulge. Peiper's command became known for atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war.

Peiper was convicted in the Malmedy massacre trial and sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted, with Peiper serving twelve years in prison. Peiper was accused of committing the Boves massacre in Italy; the investigation was closed due to insufficient evidence that he directly issued the order to kill civilians. After his release from prison, Peiper worked for both Porsche and Volkswagen before moving to France, where he worked as a freelance translator. Throughout, he maintained frequent, albeit discreet, contact with his SS network, including HIAG, a Waffen-SS lobby group. Peiper was murdered in France in July 1976, after his identity as an SS member and war criminal had been publicized there.

A relatively insignificant combat leader, Peiper achieved cult status among those who romanticize the Waffen-SS.[1] With his good looks and a multitude of awards, Peiper came to represent the image of the daring Panzer divisions. The admiration continues to the 2020s, with the official Facebook account of the United States Department of Defense featuring a glamorized picture of Peiper to commemorate the 2019 anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

The Waffen-SS historian Jens Westemeier stated that, "Peiper was an embodiment of the Nazi ideology and an egocentric, ruthless commander who ignored his own losses and created a culture within his unit where war crimes were not only tolerated but expected."

So, on 6 June, the anniversary of D-Day, wherein many Allied men gave their life to free Europe from the oppression of the Nazis, you choose to post images of a war criminal who was convicted of war crimes.

Show a little reverence, or at least respect for their sacrifice.

I fully support history and the true telling of it as opposed to the new age tripe being pedalled in the education system, but this is supposed to be a military vehicle forum. You can continue his cult following on the WAF or Axis Forum.

Oh I forgot...you missed the best photo of Peiper!

I've lost fellow aviators and classmates in combat. I do not plan to lighten up.

(1) The quoted section in the original post references the war crimes
J....convicted war criminal who was responsible for the 1944 Malmedy massacre of American prisoners of war.
No where have I glorified the man, or the WSS. They're just photos.

(2) You just cut n paste the casualty list from ww2f http://www.ww2f.com/threads/victims-of- ... acre.1689/

(3) I've been the the memorial at Malmedy and read the names, it also includes servicemen not killed in the field but in later fighting But you knew that.

(4) Feel free where to show I'm an apologist for the Third Reich, just posting vintage photos in the "vintage photos & Video" doesn't qualify.

(5) I have no control when the post is seen by others as I reside in Australia (its shown as being posted on Sun Jun 06, 2021 3:02 am - I'm not in the habit of posting photos at 3am)

(6) You seem to have no issue with Third Reich photos posted by yhhe2003 from 2014 till present some 325 pages and counting. By all means post your running comments over there.

(7) You also appear to want to be my personal values and life coach, no need I've done OK these past 65years.

(8) Somehow I just know you'll feel the need to reply

Well, 65 years should be enough to discern when a post is glorifying an Nazi war criminal as this one did. And 19 photographs of him is akin to glorification not to mention the mini biography leading up to those 19 photographs. Speaking of cut and paste, part of that bio is straight plagiarized off Wikipedia. Kettle, hello pot! Tread lightly my friend. Locked!!
