I noted that the scabbard hung vertically above is titled "carbine" and the stock is from an M1 Carbine....the leather is from an M1 Carbine scabbard but....the folded metal keeper where the slide fingerpull is...appears to the the LONG kind found on an M1 Garand scabbard, not the shorter version found on the Carbine scabbard.

I think this is either a very early style for the carbine or it has been field modified.

With the horse cavalry being phased out about the time carbine was being phased in, just modifying the M1 scabbard would seem to make more sense. Great pics.

My mom’s twin brother was with the 86th Mountain Regiment which was part of the 11th Mountain in WW2. He was a medic and I remember my mother showing me pictures of him mounted. I would ask him questions and he would never answer , just said he would rather not talk about it. He fought in the Italian Campaign and of course is now deceased.
