Finally, a specific question.
The change to the "master" dash plate that has the 6 (or 7, with winch) brass data plates riveted to it, happened starting with serial number 34152.
If you'd like to get a ballpark idea of when 34152 rolled off the assembly line, I suggest buying a copy of the M38 Reference Guide and study it.
You can find the plate information on page 338 of the September 1955 edition of the ORD9 SNL G-740.
If you get yourself a copy (free download on the willysmjeeps site) you could learn for yourself to answer many questions about serial number parts changes happening.
It's the ancient "give the man a fish, or teach him to fish" concept.
Good luck!

Re: Correct oil filter set up for M38?
Couldn't agree more; in fact I was studying the serial number design changes literally, last night. I read the green book, and TMs for light reading enjoyment, Every Day. But. the modern generation does not like to read, or study. Just ask on the net; someone will answer you for zero effort.
Now, the key to M38s is the big hole in the dash; bolted on stuff like tow shackles can be changed, but that can't. The hole appeared at SN 34151/Sep 51 to add the heater kit, and consequently, the data plate's plate.
I thought I told KK to read his green book before.....
Now, back to oil filters; I use Cunos on all my M38 restorations; why? They look cool, easy to get NOS, and gives more room for the generator. I know.....
I charge $25 for answers. Haven't figured out how to make them pay yet though.......

Yup, unless somebody changed the entire dash panel or cowl in the last 50 years after it left government service....

The early M38 data plates were screwed not riveted as there was no way to get to the back side of the dash to peen the rivets.
