Engine ID

Post by Rickyjmg » Mon Sep 19, 2022 9:42 am

Good Morning, I just purchased an M38 and I would like some help identifying these blocks. From other posts and forums I found some identification pictures that have provided some guidance. See below pictures:

Engine #1:

Is this Willys MB Late War?

Engine #2:

Is this a late M38?
See one of my references below.

I can get more information if needed. I'm trying to choose what block to go for in the repair of my new M38 and would like to make a good decision.

Thanks,

Engine #1 I see a faint 6 before the 4T, 4T was the Willys Pickup truck made from the 50’s into the mid 60’s so definitely post war civilian.

Engine #2 has the long water block flat so also post war. Serial number stamping doesn’t match anything that looks familiar, I’ve also never seen that head. It’s got a 6 - 48 casting date so possibly some sort of industrial head. What’s the casting number on the side of the block? It could be a CJ2A block that was decked and restamped.

Neither is an M38 block.

Both engines are the post war casting used from early 1946 into the early 50's

There is no added value on which one to use for the M38 right in your opinion? or can I say one could have a closer physical appearance to the correct one over the other?

Let me know your thoughts.

Neither is more correct. If possible I’d get a machine shop to check for cracks, cylinder wear, valve seating, etc. and use the block in better condition.
