Oil pump removal

Good Afternoon,
I am tearing down the L-134 flathead engine in my M-38 so it can go to the machine shop. I've had no trouble with any of it except I am stumped on removal of the oil pump. I removed the flat cover plate and a section of the pump, which fell out. The inner shaft and gear is still inside the block as well as the portion of the casing the flat cover plate bolts to. I'm afraid to get very "persuasive" with it. Help...

Do you have copies of the M38 service manuals?

They can be downloaded for free at willysmjeeps.com

Ryan Miller's "M38 Reference Guide" is also an excellent reference.
So is a Willys Universal Jeep Service Manual.

The pump is held to the block with 3 - 5/16" nuts or bolts.
Remove these and the pump comes straight out.
The mounting gasket sometimes sticks but once loose, the pump will slide out.
Sounds like you disassembled the pump in place, but the housing is still stuck to the engine block.
There is a timing procedure for installing the pump, to get the distributor positioned correctly, but that comes later if you need help.

Welcome to the G503 forum! First post I see. I am not the real welcoming committee.
RD said it all; and I will reinforce:
Stop what you are doing until you get a complete set of TMs including the SNL, and the Green book, and have read them for a month. Then you can touch a jeep. Otherwise you will damage something, or miss an important piece of PMCS, or higher level of maintenance, in which removing an oil pump falls.
Removing an oil pump is the simplest task you will have on a jeep engine. Buy. new gasket.

Thanks gentlemen,
I have a couple of the manuals and a green book but did not have the engine and clutch manual, which I will order. After input from this site and another, and after examining an exploded view provided, I was certain I had all the bolts out and so I put some Marvel Mystery Oil down the shaft from the access plate for tappets and then gently pried the shaft downward. After a nudge or two, she fell right out. This block had been open to the elements for several years so I'm sure it had begun to rust to the block.
