Dana 18 Front Output Cap Removal

Post by Buster1 » Sat May 21, 2022 10:31 am

Hey guys.

My Dana 18 front output bearing cap keeps on leaking. I’ve isolated it to the seal where the front cap mates with the actual transfer case. #8 Below. Just on the inboard side.

How difficult is it to pull that cap and re-seal the thing? I did the driveshaft Ujoints and a new yoke and seal last summer and those are dry and happy.

But now I’m wondering if it’s a simple or complex project to remove the yoke again and then those 5 bolts that hold on the bearing cap cover?

It will come off, you will need new seals for the shift rods as they will get damaged, shift rods will need to be in the correct position so the interlock does not interfear with removal. Will not have to remove the yoke.

That front cover also holds the front taper roller bearing in place, so if the gasket is not compressed to the same size as the original the endplay of the mainshaft will change.

Thanks Adam. That’s new territory for me as I’m not Dana 18 savvy. This sounds a little daunting. Gonna have to do more research...

Hey guys, another question about the output cap. Still leaking a fair bit every day.

I’ve got it free, but am unsure about fully removing it. Right now it can slide forward about 1/4”. But I don’t want to hurt anything or get in over my head if I fully remove it.

Any advice?

While not as ‘clean’ I can probably get a bead of gasket maker all the way around, in the 1/4” gap. Then re-seat it. Perhaps that might suffice?

Thanks.
