M38 Carb modification
Gentleman,
So on the 52 M38 I have, the carb is missing. I am looking online for a replacement and have found one though the Kaiser willys website that fits my Jeep. It states that it fits the 50-52 M38 with modification. The carb is a Solex for the 4-134 engine. I have gone though the website and do not see anything on here that describes what specific modifications that must be done to have this carb work. Anyone use one of these and what did you have to mod to get it to work? Any and all advice is much appreciated.

Hi Heap,
If you plug the word "solex" into the keyword search block here you'll get 87 hits of information and the pro's and con's from folks using a solex carb on the M38.

It will make your jeep run but none of the original lines will fit. personally i would not go that route.

Me neither. Would rather a Carter WO if I had to.
YS-637S carbs are solid gold nowadays, well north of $350+ even if you can find one.
That's not in everybody's wallet. Sometimes with patience you can find a nugget for reasonable bucks.
Good luck!

Check Ron Fitzpartick's site first. As for the Solex, I have used them; some worked ok; some required a fuel pressure regulator to keep it from flooding.
Yes, if you can't get an original, get a civilian Carter and have Scoutpilot rebuild it. It will work much better. Solex does not have a choke either.

Re: M38 Carb modification
So I was able to find the carb for the jeep. It was buried in a bucket of stuff in my grandparents garage. Looks like water may have sat in the bucket as some of the parts on the carb are rusted. Appears to be a carter carb based on what I am seeing online. Will need a rebuild and I guess some work to get the rust off the linkages.

Re: M38 Carb modification
Good; guys replaced these vacuum operated carbs because once they get gummed up, they won't work; unlike a plunger operated one, where you can physically make the piston move, on these you can't. Pumping the accelerator does nothing. Essentially the same carb as on the M37 Dodge.
Good luck.
On the side it will say YS637 and will have the elbow intake top, with the mounting base 90degrees to that. If the base is parallel with the elbow, that is for the M38A1 with the F134.

Re: M38 Carb modification
So the carb says on top float bowl cover, Carter W-O. The opening at the top of the carb is vertical. There is a think metal cover (cap) that sits on the vertical top opening and turns 90 degrees to make the breather hose connection. There are 8 or 9
Patent numbers that run down the side of the float bowl, also I noticed a “P” stamped into the bottom of the carb that bolts to the intake.

Re: M38 Carb modification
The correct carb is the YS637S as mentioned already. The YS637 is what came on the M38 from the factory and what should go back on the M38 if you want the M38 to be original and perform correctly with all the original vacuum and fording connections in place. John

Re: M38 Carb modification
Right; and the correct 637 carb has a built in elbow; it does not use the separate elbow as you have; and that is used on WW2 and CJ jeeps.
For a correct restoration, you must have a 637 as mentioned. You have a Carter WO, for a WW2 jeep.
