Why not neutral when going down a hill?

Consider the gearing configuration also. When in gear lubrication is good, when in neutral the gears are not getting the lubrication they need.

It's like when flat towing. If you leave the transfer case in gear and transmission in neutral you'll burn the transmission up. Transmission in gear and transfer case in neutral and you're golden.
