Suggest start with clean and lubricate.
They aren't known for speed, even on a good day.
Good luck!

Re: M38 vacuum windshield wiper motor
It depends. Do it yourself, or pay to have it done?
Not cheap at $135 each, but this outfit has a very good reputation: https://rebuildingtricowipers.com/
Assuming you own or can get a copy of the M38 ORD9 manual (September 1955 edition), on page 326 is an exploded diagram of the motor and a list of its parts. Beware that piece parts can be very hard to find and buy.
You might find this guide helpful: https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/uplo ... _guide.pdf
Also consider that no wiper was meant to work on a dry windshield. Or a dirty one. Especially these vintage vacuum wipers. Clean your glass well, then do it again. Help the motor out with a nice couple of coats of car wax or similar treatment like Rain-X on the glass, including the blade rubber. Then try your wipers out on a wet windshield.
And yes, google is your friend.
Good luck!

Re: M38 vacuum windshield wiper motor
Here is what I do. And all my wipers work.
Never drive in the rain.
If you plan to, use Rain ex.
Squirt CLP into the wiper body.
Keep looking for a better motor.
I won't pay 135 to rebuild one.

Hello wb9myq ?
Can't get used to answering a post that the fellow didn't introduce himself by a proper name.
Just to cover all your bases with your slow vacuum wiper can you tell us that you have it plumbed correctly, vented correctly, and have adequate suction available?
Note the vacuum pump is the lower section of the combo fuel/vacuum pump. Note the two tubes connected to the bottom vacuum pump. One takes vacuum in thru the intake manifold and the other delivers this boosted vacuum to the wiper "T" that supplies the wiper motors and the distributor vent.
make sure you have these correctly installed. At your vacuum "T" you can disconnect the line to the distributor and connect a vacuum gauge to determine if you are drawing adequate vacuum.

Re: M38 vacuum windshield wiper motor
Might have been me who recommend the CLP but it doesn't matter; your wipers work now.
CLP is what the Army uses on every weapon system that has moving parts, and to clean bores too. It does take more than a few drops to clean tank cannon barrels though. It has Teflon in it which is the lubricant that stays with the part. In spite of the name, there are better cleaners.
