Electric defrosters

Post by mdainsd » Sat Jul 10, 2021 11:55 am

I have had some electric defrosters around for some time. They appeared in WW2, and I would venture a guess their use continued after the war. They came in 6, 12, and 24V versions, and in a neat metal carrying case. I broke out a 12V one as my M38 has a hybrid 12/24V electrical system. They were still wrapped and sealed...but they would not stay attached to the windshield more than a minute or two. So I took the suction cups out. They were hard and the surface was not good on the business end. I sanded the flat side with 500 grit wet.dry sandpaper until the surface was smooth and all the age glaze was removed. Then I soaked them overnight in armor-all.I put it back together and used very light grease around the edge of the suction cups. Its been hanging there a couple of days now. Im so encouraged that I am going to replace the brittle wiring and use them, when necessary.
