M38 AC Fuel Gauge NOS, Readings

Post by DieFledermaus » Tue Jun 29, 2021 2:25 pm

Hi Gee,
NOS AC Fuel gauge and NOS Sending Unit. When ignition turned on for first time, fuel reads correctly at 1/2.
When switched off and then switched on again engine not running), it then reads 1/8. It reads 1/8 when engine is running. Jeep sits overnite, ignition switched on and it reads 1/2 again. Hmmmm.
Dash plate has an extra ground wire added, as does the fuel sender

Is it truly NOS? They are selling repops now that look pretty convincing but arent worth a crap. They fog up and read inaccurately.

The best ground for the panel is to make up a spider cable that connects to the mounting clamp screws on the temp, gas and pressure gauge, to a lead that connects to the body. Use internal tooth star washers at each of the connections.

Turned out to be a faulty gauge. It was NOS, yes, but as we know sometines items got surplused that were not serviceable/crap. I find these electric gauges kinda dodgy anyway. The WWII stuff is better. I did take your advice and add a spider-ground to the gauges just to be sure. And you bought a number of M38 parts from me when I lived in California. This is my eighth M38. All done. Back to aviation! You don't have a Dehavilland Beave hiding in your hangar, do you ;)

Perhaps I saw a picture of your M38 on an airfield? As you built up the jeep, it had slightly different shades of paint (from all the military contractors who made brackets, etc,). You live in San Diego area, no? You bought M38 battery holders and the like.
