How to recognize an original fuel pump

Post by nicola1971 » Tue Mar 16, 2021 1:01 am

Hello everybody,
I am Nick from Italy and fresh owner of a 1951 M38. She is in very good conditions but with some non original parts, like the fuel pump and electrical wipers. I want to restore an original AC double action pump and I am looking for some on ebay. The question is: how do I recognize a true original AC pump? I see many new items on the market and Scams are always there...
Many thanks, ciao!
Nick

Compare them (the ones you are seeing for sale) to the photos and parts numbers that are in the original manuals.

The AC Pumps have the Part No. on the flange. NOS and good used rebuildable pumps are scarce, Study both the ORD 9 G-740 (M-38) and Ord 9-G-758 (M-38A1. You will discover that there were upgrades to the pumps and that the Army used M-38A1 Pumps on the M-38. It can get confusing, but it is proper to use either.

What is stamped on the edge of the mounting flange? Should be 4 digits.

Difficult to say... look like "something" and then 260

That number is 4260, Willys number is 908715 for the M-38A1, AC Part No. is 5594260.

There are at least 1/2 Dozen Willys numbers for M-38/M-38A1, they all share components and fit either JEEP. It will be very difficult at this point in the game to chase any one of these pumps down. The SNL's are very confusing on these particular. I have the 4260 as a rebuildable spare plus a, NOS spare. Have had these 40 years. None are for sale.
