Carb to manifold gasket

Post by Scott in NM » Fri Mar 12, 2021 1:37 pm

Can't find any reference (ORD 9 or Reference Manual) relating to the gasket that the carb sits on. With diffuser, without, does it make a difference? Have a spare with diffuser, would rather use that than order one leaving this one taking up space on the shelf. Inputs?

Hi Scott,
Paragraph 95 on page 96 of TM9-1804A says to install it and calls it a DIFFUSER.

The M38 ORD9 on page 68 camouflages it by calling it an INSULATOR, WO-A923, G740-7372543.

The manual calls for one regular thin gasket, but isn't clear whether it goes on top or bottom of the diffuser......unless....it says "place a gasket and diffuser on the manifold", so I guess that means the thin gasket goes on the bottom.

My diffuser came assembled with copper crush grommets on the stud holes. I believe it's re-pop not NOS so I have no clue what was original. If you have that kind, some folks say you have to be careful to tighten the stud nuts properly to crush the grommets or you can have vacuum leaks. Other folks say to cut the crush grommets off and use a pair of thin gaskets, one above and one below, to avoid vacuum leaks. That's what I do on mine.

Good luck!

I have a gasket with separate diffuser, I removed the diffuser. The gasket I have did not seal well around the diffuser and the gap caused a very loud screech/whistle when accelerating. I will be ordering a new gasket with built in diffuser

Do any of the auto parts stores sell the thin gasket that lays on top of the manifold?
