If I didn't say this before, that "reputable" shop, is totally incompetent.

The machine shop has been the best at helping resolve the issues. It just was The Perfect Storm of worn tappets and bores. They have built many a engine for my friend and never had any issues. We in no way place the blame on them.

Update: tappet bores worn as well as tappets. Bought new standard tappets but some are undersized according to spec data. Plus the bores are too worn to get back to the 0.0005 min and 0.002 max clearance. Now looking at buying 0.004 oversize tappets but will need to ream tappet bore. Who has the reamer needed????/
Just an info.
Jeep Sud Est in South of France has likely oversized tappets from Ford.
I've received these tappets (packed in red paper) by error when I was rebuilding my engine.
Couldn't do anything with them so they were returned and replaced by standard tappets.
The tappet dia was .626'' vs the standard size of 0.622".
I guess these are very rare and difficult tappets to find.

If my machine shop had assembled an engine and did not measure the tappet bores first, I would sue them for gross negligence. It would be their fault anything wore as a result of missing that important detail.

The oversized tappet code is GPW-6500-B.
