Do most guys run with snorkle and snorter connected?

Post by southerncomfort » Fri Jan 29, 2021 5:29 am

Got a friend who has one and runs with both connected full time. Someone who drove one in the military said the first thing they did when ashore was to disconnect at least the snorter. Not set up for alloweing proper back pressure and would get water in and cause issues. Should my friend disconnect the snorter down at the muffler exhaust tip and leave it on for looks only? Or connect it for short runs and display? Or, is it OK to leave it connected full time.

I leave mine off and put them on only if I'm going to a show or something...the exhaust condensates when it cools and when you start it, it blows blackwater all over the top...and the roll up door.. another thought is that if anyone leans or touches the exhaust they could be burned pretty good...this has been discussed before here...google it,

We are aware of the hot snorter issue and have read about using a exhaust guard for it, but we were primarily interested in the engine and jeep performance with the snorter connected full time. We have drilled a small hole at the lower bend of the snorter to allow moisture and rain water to drain. But, yes, inside the cargo trailer, it leaves it's mark on the roof when it starts up.

We are having a little flutter in the engine and were wondering if it could be exhaust rlated. I may disconnect it temporarily and see if we notice any difference. Just wondering what the community does with this.

I ran mine connected for years. used a m151 guard on exhaust and added a curved piece at the top to angle black soot away from vehicle. maybe a little performance issue with air intake but nothing major. not really a daily driver also.

On some MV types, it could contribute to burned valves due to increased back pressure.

No I do not leave it connected and as JG said, it will cause serious issues if you do.
As for actually using them in service, does anyone have any pictures of M38s actually being submerged? It is a very bad idea. In one unit I was in, we had all the fording kits for our M60A1s; they stayed in big boxes in the supply room and we did not ever use them. We had bridges.
We did swim our M113s, M114s, and M151s (another unit); but that was swimming, not driving across the bottom.

Try breathing through a straw. Then make the straw longer...

I never leave mine on.
