paint off serial number plate

Post by Sred » Sat Jan 02, 2021 2:49 pm

The name, patent, and serial number plate on my recently purchased M38 is painted over. I was able to remove the plate from the fender well. Any thoughts/ advice on how best to remove the paint from the plate while keeping the original information underneath readable?

I used a spray om paint stripper from Home Depot. I used it on a M416 data plate to remove old paint over spray. . sprayed it on waited 15 seconds and wiped off. Did it a few times, left black original printing but the over spray was 90% removed. I did not mind some left over paint as the date plate looks like it has been on the trailer for 50 years .

If you have to restore the data plate completely, please read this:

The paint stripper or the electrolityc paint stripping will do the same job on paint.
If your data plate is also rusted, prefer the electrolityc process. Do not use sand paper.

I have used brake fluid successfully to remove paint from data plates.

I ended up using a citrus based paint stripper.
Thank you all for the advice. I was worried to put any chemicals on the plate until I read your replies

I happened to have this from a house project. I let it set on the plate less than 10 minutes at a time as I was worried how it would work. I had two layers of paint to go thru.
