Clutch Cable Question

Post by Andy Howell » Fri Jan 01, 2021 2:05 pm

Happy New Year From Mississippi!
I have too much free play on my clutch pedal & the most likely suspect to me is a stretched cable, seeing how the clevis is tightened all the way up. So my question is can I change the cable without disassembling the clutch housing from the engine? I see the little ball on the end & so it must index to the release arm in a slot but I can't see up in there. The TM is not clear about how to service this part.
Also there is no stay cable installed on this Jeep, I have both cables new. Thanks!
PS- I have no idea where these photos came from!

I’ve never seen a cable stretch to the point of unable to adjust it. Normally the disk itself will wear thin and that will change the fork angle which requires you to adjust cable. I’d bet your about worn out on the disk.

Thanks.
But if the disc wears thin, won't that make the pressure plate release levers run High, thereby Reducing Free Play?
My problem is the other way round.

Clutch Cable Question

Have you checked the bushings for the linkage. If something slipped or worn that certainly can increase slop. You can always remove the access panels and inspect the cable and clutch if your avoiding pulling the motor or dropping the trans/ case.

BTW yes you can carefully replace a cable without taking everything apart. I had a cable slip in assembly and just fished it back in via the hole and the bell housing access plate. Took a long reach needle nose and nimble fingers but got it back on.
