seat cushions

Post by JMZ421 » Sun Dec 27, 2020 10:04 am

Does anyone know if a manufacture date of 1968 for NOS set of seat cushions would have the "S" spring or coil type spring for the M38. Long shot but I thought I would ask. The stock number matches what's in the ORD 9 but I know there was a change to the coil and I want the S type. John

Both of these contained S style springs.

Thank you for the info. Those pictures are the same date as the seats I am looking at so that helps. Thanks again. John

The M-38/M-38A1 used both "S" and "Coil" type Springs. in the Seat Back Cushions. Best ask the person selling the NOS Springs what type is in the wrapper.

My M38 has the S and the seller does not want to peel back the cover to see( don't blame him), hence my request to ask a potential m series seat expert about the dates on the ORIGINAL box. Seller no seat expert on springs. M38 NOS seats have the pan attached so not so easy.

I have been thru a half dozen ORD 8's, Ord 9's deciphering M-38/M-38A1 rear Seat Assy's Coil Springs, Zig-ZagVinylite-Springs, Pads, Cushions, , Jeep Part Numbers, Ordnance Part Numbers, Federal Stock Numbers more than a few times, the task is a real head scratcher as the numbers are not all in one SNL or Jeep factory parts list.
What happens i that the noun or the part number for those nouns are not consistent.. It's been at least 20 years since I last went thru this. I still have a set of rear seat springs not sure if Coil or Zig Zag, tho. Also have NOS correct OD Code !2 Vinylite GI IssueFactory Seat covers but it will be a while before I can get to them.

Some NOS GI Surplus parts may be Depot Repacks and the part can be earlier or later.
One example I had were a couple NOS GPW "F-Script" Exhaust Manifolds that were reboxed with M-38 Willys number and FSN. Came from Letterkenny in the late 60's.

I used 19 gauge Dark Annealed Steel to repair those broken small springs on the back of my seat springs. I layed a phillips head screwdriver parallel to the seats springs and wrapped this wire around it, then around the springs and kept going. The color and size even matches the original springs. Pretty easy to do this and looks great and holds everything like it should. This worked for me, just thought I would tell you. John
