Best guess at hood serial number?

Post by wc56daveyboy » Tue Jun 30, 2020 4:39 pm

M38 serial number (data plate) 22630
Delivered 6-51

No hood number found.

Best guess at what hood number might be?
Army or marine or ?? Contract?

Is there a list somewhere to extrapolate
The hood number based on the data plate serial number/ DOD?

Thanks.

Oh. One more thing:

Is there a corresponding frame number that should match the data plate or is the data plate all there is?

There is no frame number.
Make sure you get the green M38 restoration book; it is invaluable.
The guys on the M series site will tell you to put your phone number on the hood; it will scew the data base if you make up a registration number in case future researchers think yours is original. To which I say is nonsense. We routinely interpolate registration numbers for WW2 jeeps.

When there's no way to recover or discover any no-kidding true original number, I've only seen reasonable recommendation from folks on the willysmjeeps and other sites, including this one, to "interpolate", or "extrapolate" (also known as "invent") any phony (also known as "false") number you want, even using the date of delivery range that you want or makes you happy, including but not limited to using your phone number (handy when you can't remember it and get lost) if you want.

I believe all they ever asked was to NOT give or try to pass off a contrived, interpolated, extrapolated, invented, phony, or false number into their data base that they work so hard trying to keep factual and accurate. I'm pretty sure some data bases are more polluted than others, but nobody will ever know for sure. And the jeep police aren't looking. Do what makes you happy. Photographic evidence can be priceless.

Not much to ask. Seems reasonable to me.

No big deal and probably humorous to park next to a hood registration number somebody already used.

Whole different ball game with the numbers on your title.

I found an old post here and starting in May 51' hood numbers began with 208, then around August 51' the 209 started. Maybe start your M38 with the 208. John

The numbers on my M38 are,

Serial 24902
DoD 6-51
Hood # 2391937

I believe the hood numbers to be original, they were on the first layer of OD (they had been masked over on subsequent re paints).
All the patina matched on this vehicle when I got it, that's my basis for originality.

Mine is serial number MC23100, dated 6-51 and registration number 20892177.
Yes, here on G, it is de rigeur to interpolate a registration number. Not on M series though.
Trust me, when the current owners are dead, and provided the green dealers have not cut them up for scrap, no one will care what the numbers you put on it. In fact, no one cares now. You aren't restoring the crown jewels.

Whats nice about this hobby is the opportunity to pursue it in the military where you are surrounded by your toys, the USA numbers are an everyday part of life. The early M-Series era was far from boring.

My hood number had been painted over with several layers of OD --- I used medium sand paper to gently (with circular motion) remove the layers of paint until the outline of the numbers appeared. It took some time and was dusty, but worth it.

My ‘new’ M38 is MC24198, 6-51. I’ve not uncovered any hood numbers, but I do have two layers of distinctly different OD green I’m finding.

Thanks for re-invigorating this thread. Watching with interest.
