WIPER TUBING

Post by JMZ421 » Tue Jun 19, 2018 4:45 pm

Does anyone sell a pre-formed 1/4 inch wiper tubing from the wiper shut off valve to where it connects to the 7/32 rubber hose by the hood arm? This is for the M38. I can make my own but if this is available that would be good also. Thank you, John

You can some times find the pre cut complete set of wiper hose kit on ebay.

Too easy to make to even consider buying it pre formed. Never saw any anyway.

I have three different tubing benders, but believe it or not, the small, cheap one in the bottom picture is the one I use the most! It's specifically for 1/4" tubing, is easy to use and makes a great bend. $15. on e-bay.

The one marked "RIGID" is the Tubing Bender to get, it does 1/4", 3/16" and 3/8" and is easy to master.

That one is fine if you want to make large radius bends, but you can't make small radius, tight bends with it. To each his own, I guess.

The bottom one in the picture is the only one I ever had; and if you want to make large radius bends, those are easy to make by hand.

I also have the lower priced tubing benders in my tool chest and between the types different radius bends can result with practice. Bending tubing is not an exact science, it takes much practice to match original factory bends.

I've installed many, many automatic grease systems and fire suppression systems on large Cat loaders and dozers over the years, so I have plenty of experience bending steel tubing, it's an art to do it right!

Yes, it's an art, and can be learned in about two minutes after you crimp a couple of pieces you will quickly get the hang of it. Not rocket surgery.

I have been reading that steel or copper tubing was used from the factory for these "wiper" tubes, copper mainly if the tubing needed replaced. My M38 has steel tubing. Thank you all for the responses as I will buy that tool to make sure all the bends are correct and factory looking. John

Go to your ORD 8 or ORD 9 and you will note that original Tubing is listed with OAL.
There are instructions that tell you that 1/4" Copper tubing is to be substituted (Just for wipers). The Original OAL can be used for reference.
There are different degrees of "getting the hang of it", tho.

Your're welcome, and the credit actually goes to the Army for training me to use their publications.
