That hole is a CJ-3A appendage from the CJ-3A bumper that has been modified to M-38 configuration. There was a Crank Kit for the CJ-3A which included the MB/CJ-2A Nut.

I'm not disputing that the crank nut was not applied to the M38 but I've noticed a number of photos furnished by others who have acquired M38 barn finds with it. I suppose all of these M38s had had engines replaced somewhere in their lives with the MB L134. I also wonder if stocks of the older version of L134s leftover from the MB were retained by Maintenance floats to support the M38 during it's short service life. Just wondering.

It does not happen that way, when a vehicle is active in the system, only the SNL's for that vehicle are valid. What collectors are experiencing are , in this case, M-38's that have been out of the system for a half century and are the product of 50 years of "hand me down" non military use.
The only crankshaft pulley nut in the system for the M-38 is the 638513, the 387633 Nut with the Pin for hand crank is not listed in any Parts Manual for the G-740 M-38 Jeep.
That 387633Nut with Pin did remain in the Parts System thru the 60's on the PE-95's that were still in the hands of some units. I witnessed the PE 95 in some AAA units during the early 60's that used them to power their Radar Vans. Many of you may have PE-95 Gen Sets that lingered thru the 60's and were Depot Rebuilt with water proof Ignition. They retained the 397633 Nut w/Pin as the PE-95 had a Hand Crank stored on it as part of the OVE.
The M-38 had an approximate 20 year service life, the M-38A1 did not push them out, but the Army started surplusing them by the hundreds in the mid 60's as the M-151 was being issued to replace them.
By 1968-70 the Property Disposal yards had hundreds of nice M-38's waiting for disposal.

Here is something interesting and pertinent to the topic. I have engine RMC 56788, but it came with my M38, not installed. Upon examination, I found that it had been installed in an MB; it had the MB front mount, and the two studs on the side for the coil. Inside it was all M38 type.
The crank nut is the flat M38 type.

PE-95 had M-38 post war Gear type engines fitted during visits to support units and during Depot rebuilds. The Army started buying Gear type L-134 Replacements post war and During Korean conflict. They used the MB/CJ-2A Gear Type Front plate. I have a 50's gear type engine from a Depot overhauled PE 95 with water proof ignition.

just because a part isn't listed in any parts manual should not automatically suggest it wasn't used. For example, the rubber button on the starter switch. Part is not found in any m38 - M38A1 manual that I can see.
