M38 transfer case identification

Post by Harleygaz » Wed Feb 12, 2020 8:48 am

Hi. I finally have the tub off my M38 and I’m trying to identify how much might be original 6/52 or at least period correct. Per the green book the TC manufactured date should be on top near where it mates to the transmission but I don’t see it. I do have what looks like a serial number on top of the driver’s side mounting flange E19*3 where the * is a number that is badly stamped and all I have is a curved top part. I think it may be 0 but could be any of 0,2,8 or 9. On the back of the case is a casting mark 18-15-18 below which is W.O.DIV and below that is hard to read but may be 2 letters then ‘-3’. I’ve searched as much as I can but I can’t find any reference to an 18-15-18 case.

Would this be the original TC? Is it possible to date it from the possible serial number?

I tried loading pictures but had a problem, I’ll try adding as comments to this post

Take a look at the Pivot Pin for the two shift levers. Is ir threaded into the Front Output Cap, or is it held in place with a set screw? M-38 has the threaded Pivot Pin.

It has the threaded pivot pin so it is military, what I don’t know is if it is original to the M38 or if it could have come from a different military vehicle. So far I haven’t been able to find any information on the 18-15-18 casting number. Everything I’ve seen on the forums ref3s to a C prefix and nothing mentions that particular casting number.

M-38 X-fer has internal Expanding Brake, the A-1 has Ext Contracting/Internal Expanding Brake.
The ORD 7375051(SP--18-15-18) Case is used on both M-38A1 amd M-38. It is also found on the CJ-3A, there should be no Issue using that Spicer Case Number.

Thx Joe. In that case - no pun intended! - I think it’s fair to assume the tfr case and transmission are original to my Jeep.
