Battery recommendation

Post by Rick E. » Thu Apr 11, 2019 2:45 pm

I am looking for recommendations and experience for replacement batteries. I've been trying to do a comprehensive motor pool restoration. But where I am going to deviate will be the battery. I do not want to use a 2nh battery that requires maintenance and may leak. Is there a good battery out there that's maintenance free, leak free, and is similar Dimensions that will fit in the space and use the same hold Downs? I see Optima has a good gel battery but the dimensions look a bit off. Thanks for the recommendations.

22NF and 51R seem to be the best choices

I have NAPA 51R batteries and so far have good luck with them. Not real expensive. I think its going on 3 years now with them. I take them to autozone and have them charged in the Spring and they seem to be good all summer. This charger works really well and its free. I also plug in my 24 volt Battery tender up after each use. Tender is mounted on the wall and all you have to do is clip on the negative post by the headlight and positive right to the power stud nut on the starter as you do not have to open up the cowl cover or disconnect any cable. Works for me. John

51R is my choice too. More CCA than the 2NH. Made for Honda Accord if I remember, but doesn't matter. I get mine from the local Interstate Battery warehouse. Bless were 34 bucks each last time I bought a pair. i also use them in my M37, No problems after three years.

Do they also work with the battery hold down? Thanks for the replies.

I bought 51Rs at O'kragens and they are smaller than the battery hold downs...

I used Interstate 51R's in mine, I made some filler strips from plastic for both ends and one side to fit the hold downs. Been installed for three years, haven't moved at all, they are kept on a 24v tender for the winter.
