Looking for info books on 151s

Post by ccdoran » Sat Sep 03, 2022 3:09 pm

Hi guys,

I have been a member of the G for a long time. My experience has been in MB/GPWs, and in GPs. I have recently bought a 151A2, and i am looking for books in order to get a base of general information about these jeeps. For the regular MB/GPW folks there are book like the "All American Wonder" series, and John Farley's books "The Standardised Wartime Jeep" vols 1 & 2, etc. These books are filled with both general information about the different models, how their production came about, the differences in the models, and also some very specific information like when certain production changes were made.

Are there any books like these written about the M151 series vehicles?

Thanks!
Chris

David Doyle has a book on the more modern M151 series that provide many details.
Comparing the early TMs to the later one's is where you will ID most changes, for example an early -20 parts manual will show M151 and A1 parts VS the later 1972+ versions which illustrate the A2 parts.
Now it takes a while for these TM's to catch up sometimes, and photos are reused from earlier vehicles on occasion, so finding a proper one may be a little elusive. and by early 70's the Army went to line illustrations VS photos which stinks.'

The Squadron and Walk Around series publications (see David Doyles site) would be an easy 1st pub. Web sites like Kens (Mutt Guru) and several others also have extensive listings of contracts and such.

If there are specific questions about the MUTT, then Rick is an excellent source as well, and the G838 web site. https://www.g838.org/

They have a decent resources page as well:

One of Davids M151 books, not sure how far into the A2 it goes, but you could email him:
"M151 MUTT IN ACTION
FROM $18.50
The M151 was intended to be a lightweight, high-mobility replacement for the M38A1, itself a successor to the famed World War II jeep. Dubbed the Military Utility Tactical Truck or MUTT by the military - GIs almost universally referred to the vehicle as a jeep. The series' service life spanned more than 40 years and four manufacturers. 80 pages."

Worst case, ask me....I have 3 dead A2's projects, one TOW equipped M825 MUTT, and two friends A1's sitting here at my place, about 28 dead engine cores of sorted years in a row under trees out back. and have been doing MUTTs since 1984 both in service use and in private collection.
