M151 / M416 Wheel Differences.

Post by Hypnogator » Tue Jun 01, 2021 6:24 pm

This is probably something that EVERYBODY on the board knows except me. Wouldn't be the first time. I recently tried to swap two of the more worn tires on my early AM General M151A2 with a couple of better tires from my M416 trailer, by simply taking the wheels off of the MUTT and Trailer and swapping them. They wouldn't fit on the other vehicle! They looked identical, but there seemed to be a fraction of an inch difference between the spacing of the lug bolts on the two vehicles.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!??! I find it astounding that milspec vehicles with nearly identical wheels wouldn't be 100% interchangeable. Can someone enlighten me? I'm thinking about getting a spare set of wheels so I can quickly swap better "road" tires for those with original military treads. Do I have to be concerned with whether they are Ford vs AMG wheels, or M151 vs M416 wheels? :?: :?: :?:

As always, thanks for helping this poor old soldier muddle through! 8)

151 and 416 use the same wheels and tires. Are you sure you have a 416 and not a M100?

there is a version of the M416 that has wheels designed to interchange with the M422 mighty mite, as used by the marine corps. the M100 trailer has half round fenders, the M416 trailer has angled fenders. this may help you clarify, if your trailer ID plate is missing.

If any of your rims look like these, then they are for Mity Mite use.

If they look like this, then these will fit the M151-series and the M416-series but these are the very early magnesium rims used for the first 3 to 4 years of production.

Just to echo what Rick said.

The wheels from an M151 had to fit the M416 since the M151 carried the only spare tire for both vehicles.

Much the same for the GPW and MB which carried the spare for both the jeep and the Bantam trailer. On at least one occasion I had to use the spare off the GPW to replace a flat on my T3 trailer.

I put a under the pick up bed spare tire carrier on the underneath of a m416, also put m38a1 spare tire carrier on a m416.Someone stole both of them of the carriers(in my back yard). Thought provoking comment!

I think 199th MP may have hit the nail on the head. Here is an older picture of MUTT with some I just took of JEFF today. (Because MUTT & JEFF go together...  ).

(Sorry, forgot how to upload photos, if I ever knew how).

FWIW, the lug bolts on the trailer 3 5/32" center to center. The camouflage pattern looks more like what I've seen on Marine Corps vehicles than on Army vehicles.

Change your trailer hubs to 416 hubs instead of the mighty mite hubs. Then you have the same 5 1/2" pattern for both. You could probably sell the mite hubs to a Mite owner.

Thanks, Rickf. That was going to be my next question: Can I swap out the hubs, or do I need to change axles or swap trailers to make them compatible. 8)

I am hoping Ken will chime in but I am thinking the hubs will interchange. That picture that he posted sort of reinforces my idea since it appears to be a conversion for sale. If that is the case you might even find someone with a Mite and a 416 that is willing to swap parts.

If I get a chance today I will look up my trailer book and see what the parts look like and see if it lists the Mite hubs.
