You have to take the four bolts out of the side of the transfer case and remove the shifter shaft. look in manual -34-1, page 7-45 and that is where the procedure starts. To much to try to describe on here.

I removed the 4 bolt inspection plate but with only 3/4' space between tran. hsg. & cross member vertical pylon it would take special made snap ring pliers for me to even attempt to accomplish task! So in about 2 hours of additional work the engine/tran. assy. is ready to pull. Of course that opens up a big can of worms deciding what else to do with engine bay & oil pan leaks etc. etc.

Yep, and once the pan is off to fix the gasket you know you will need to take a look at the rod and main bearings and you might as well replace that rear main seal, But wait, you are halfway there plus it is hanging right in front of you so you might as well pull the front timing gear cover and replace the front crank seal and cover gasket. Well, we had to take the water pump off to do that....................................., Yea, I know exactly how that goes.

I have done it using a screw, then when that did not work, I used needle nose pliers that I ground "thinner", tiny locking pliers and various modified screwdrivers bent into a hook.... three hours later I had a new one in. I was lucky and did not damage the shaft.

I would follow Rick's advice, its the correct procedure.

Re: 2 wd/ 4wd shifter shaft seal more update

The snap rings on the shifter shaft were actually E clips so I made a 2 prong fork out of 1/16 " & pushed them off the shaft & yes I did stuff rags in there so I wouldn't have to go on a fishing trip! With power unit out of chassis I believe the only oil leak is the right rear corner of valve cover. Going to live life on the edge & not mess with the pan gskt. ( going to replace side cover gskt.) . The clutch has the ceramic button style disc; too grabby & really scours the surface of the pressure plate & flywheel . The guy who sold me MUTT sent a new pressure plate & disc with it; the number on the pressure plate on engine & spare both say: 8328265 , the spare disc which is what I call a composite ( not button ) has no numbers. The 34P shows two choices on pressure plate & disc ! GOAL: eliminate button style , QUESTION : will 8328265 pp & composite disc work together ?

TIA

Buzzin....

the 8328265 disk will work fine.....miles smoother than the button-type (which by the way is p/n 11669136). While you are swapping the clutch disk, why not check the condition of the release bearing? If it feels rough or rattles, get a new one.

Check the flywheel closely. When I took out my puck clutch the flywheel was really chewed up by it and needed to be turned before putting in the new disc. You can try putting the new disc right in but you are taking the chance that the chewed flywheel will eat the disc right up.

# 1; is the pickup module on the prestolite breakerless a white plastic ? I removed the cap to install the Swiss module & surprise it already has electronic & it is different than Swiss
#2 ; is the civilian spark plug # ( used with adapter ) still RJ6C ? this MUTT has RJ8C re : old post dated 04/01/14 Rick F.
TIA

The spark plug will not change and the rotor for the Prestolite is the same rotor as the points. All the ones I have seen are black. Smal rotor, not large like the Swiss controls. Is it possible you have a Pertronics kit in there?

I checked out the past post you linked us to; MUTT guru posted pictures of Swiss & Prestolite kits. The prestolite kit especially the part laying on the instruction sheet looks exactly like what I have. Also based on the info in that post it looks like I will have to have some original style distributor parts on hand when this Prestolite fails & I attempt to install Swiss ?? Does Pertronix make a kit for MUTT ? I have installed a few here on the farm & I am very pleased with them. Can you increase the spark plug gap when you switch to breakerless?

Pertronix makes a 4 cylinder kit and a 6 cylinder kit for the M series distributors. You might be able to increase the gap but I would not advise it since it will put more load on the coil. There is nothing to gain from increasing the gap on a low compression motor.
