Re: winches
None recommended! The frame rails are not really rail, they are unibody panels which are sheet metal panels all bent together. A winch will work if it is a smaller one and all you do is pull straight ahead but in reality you never get the choice to pull straight ahead if it is you that is stuck. And if you are pulling someone else out you will need to anchor yourself from the rear and what do you have for a frame to support that pull? Nothing, just unibody panels. If you insist then the only real option is 24 volt electric since you do not have any hydraulic on the vehicle. Really it comes down to what do you want to do with the vehicle? If it is one you want to restore as a military vehicle and you want it to be in good shape then what I said above pertains.
If you are building a woods beater then yea, go for it. It doesn't really matter if it breaks apart, you can weld it back together.
Your vehicle, totally your choice.

Re: winches
there is a winch system available that works a bit differently than the type you're thinking about. it utilizes a pair of devices that mount over your wheel studs. you just leave them in place, then when needed, you get out the cable and anchor, or use a tree, if one is nearby. run the cable out to the anchor point, run it back to your vehicle, and connect it to the device on your wheels. engage the four wheel drive, and put it in first gear. the cable will begin to wind up on the device, as the wheels turn, which will pull you out of the hole. i looked into this system a while back. it is used by the Canadian military on their Iltis vehicles. it works pretty well, but it's not cheap.

Re: winches
Ya, I do remember that set up, thought there were pics, thought I had it bookmarked/copied.Worked good.
It was something like a rim(with no tire) mounted on the wheel wrap the rope/steel cable? on rim, then put the mutt in gear/drive it to wrap the rope around the rim thus pulling out the vehicle.

Re: winches
I have seen those advertised in videos, I just thought a power winch could do more. Like drag a tree trunk out of the way. Or pull off center. Can I still get 12 volts off one battery? I figure a winch in the 6000 lb range would work for me. Hydraulic could work, just have to see if there is room on the right side of engine compartment. Power steering pump would be strong enough. I have the 60 amp alternator with three belt pulleys.

Re: winches
most winch companies sell 24v winches. jeep cherokees are unibody and put winches on. i think work ok as long as mount frame built correct.

Re: winches
Tell that to this guy. Notice the frame rails and then look off to the left to see the winch sitting on the ground on the pretty substantial mount. I don't care how big the mount is, it is still only attached to sheet metal. A Cherokee and most other unibody vehicles were built a lot stronger than these since they all have to pass front end collision safety standards. AND, They were not built to minimum bid and minimum weight specifications.
Buy hey, Prove me wrong and show me how it is done. I would like to see.

Re: winches
An old M998 HUMVEE winch would be 12 V and pick her up off the ground. Make a new bumper mount and wire it in.
But again, this is not the best vehicle to go 4x4 for fun in when there are other more capable vehicles especially in parts upgrades...CJ5 comes to mind,

Re: winches
The winches on the M998 HMMWV were 24 volt, not 12. At least the one on my old HMMWV was 24 volts. Mine had a 9000 lb. capacity, and was VERY HEAVY. In my opinion, it is way to big and heavy for a M151.

Re: winches
Yes, I mistyped 12V...meant 24V. and I have a remounted HUMVEE winch on my Bronco II with a 12V motor ($100) so It can be converted to 12V for the record.
