Here is the inside of my M151A1 tank. Looks like Swiss cheese so the plan is to weld patches on the inside and weld it back together.

I would coat it instead of welding it. The chances of getting all of that sealed by welding in patches is slim. Especially without distorting the tank to the point where you will not be able to get the top and bottom to line up for that weld. There are many coatings out there specifically for this and now you have it wide open that makes it real easy to do it and be sure it is fully coated.
