60 amp alternator

Anybody here ever put a voltage regulator in one ? Success rate very high ? Or should I just get a reman. done by "professionals" ?

TIA

Rick from G838 could be able should be able to help you, but a 60 amp Alternator has voltage regulator built into it. No need for a bread box/voltage reg. (2 cents). Is your a 3 pulley belt type ?

Buzzin....

here's what you should do to get an idea of whether you want to tackle this yourself.

Go to the G839 Board https://www.g838.org/public_html/added_ ... nuals.html

Scroll down the Manuals section to "Component Manuals and Guides". Find and download these two TMs:-
TM9-2920-225-34 (Maintenance) and TM9-2920-225-34P (Parts). If you decide against a D-I-Y repair, put the two TMs on a memory stick or disk and take the alternator plus the TMs to a good auto-electrical shop and let them do the repair.

thanks for the replies, Leece Neville triple pulley, I have been trying to download the charging sys. trouble shooting that Kurt posted. My computer skills are weak !Just wondered if installing the volt regulator was voodoo rocket science.

As much as I would like to say I can help I can't really offer first hand experience here. I have never done one of these myself. I have done hundreds of civilian alternators with integral regulators and generally they are not that big of a deal. I didn't look at the manuals Ken referred to but they are generally pretty comprehensive. But if you do not feel confident then have it done at a shop but do take the manuals on disc since they are unlikely to have the specs they will need on hand and that will save a lot of time.

If I remember right something has to be grounded, I'll see if I can find the post,There was a DA Pam 750-33 TM that covered the charging system, maybe you'll get it by googling it.

Buzz, more info please. How do you know it's not charging ? What does a rebuild cost these days vs. buying another one used or nos. ? Yes they are grounded. 2 wires on top of alt. The fat/bigger is Hot, skinny one is a ground.

Got MUTT (A2) home around end of Nov. last year, drove it approx 15 miles to see if anything major turned up. Then I went to work on it installing hot water heater kit & about a million small jobs. About a month ago I pulled it out of shop & started driving it quite a bit on short trips, about half the time within anywhere from two to five minutes AFTER startup it pegs the batt/gen gauge to the high side. During the process of this anomaly I didn't catch it early & the battery gas smell alerted me. Another time at idle rpm it did it again & the rpm's were pulled down. I have yet to have a multimeter attached to it when this occurs but with the needle pegging ; r.p.m's pulling down , batt. gas smell & all it takes to correct it is to turn ign. sw. off then back on (which stops over charge). All of that is why I suspect volt reg. I Just got the charging sys. trouble shooting thing downloaded & printed will study it now.
no I have not priced anything yet
yes my alt. appears to be wired correctly
batt/gen indicator is in proper spot with ign. on & motor not running; then instantly in proper spot upon engine start

THANKS !

Check the #3 wire from the alternator over to the fender. This is the ground wire, make sure the connection at the fender is clean and tight. Same with the ground connection from batteries to body. Sounds like a regulator but a bad ground will do the same thing.

Follow up : Cleaned connections at both ends of alt. ground cable & re-installed with new inside/outside star lockwashers . Post maint. ops check it went into overcharge mode in about 3 minutes. DAG NABBIT ! It was tough enough removing alt. when grill , radiator & fan were off ! Will keep you updated on the saga.

I usually just take off the air cleaner and sometimes the air cleaner brackets if it is a tough one to get the bolts off of. You don't really gain much by taking all that other stuff off.
What is the condition of the batteries? Were they both replaced as a set? If one is bad then you will definitely get this condition since one battery will drag down the voltage and the regulator will kick in and try to bring things back up. This is the main problem with a series battery system. Both batteries have to be the exact same state of charge and condition.

The regulators on either the Leece-Neville or Prestolite alternators aren't a big issue to change out. Six screws and it pops out the back of the housing. There's not much room in the 151 engine compartment but it's easier than removing the alternator the way its mounting bolts are situated. You do want to make sure the battery ground lead is removed from the batteries so there's no power in the system when your doing this. The common problems with the AMA5104 alternators are the 50 ohm, 50 watt resistor on the regulator casting fails, the brushes wear out, or the regulator dies. The resistor is replacable as are the brushes but the regulator needs to be changed as a unit since it's potted. Regulators for either alternator are available from Southern Automotive, the current contractor and the have good troubleshooting guides on their website to help you resolve your problems.

Well ! I purchased a voltage reg. from Tom @ Southern Automotive. ( real nice helpful guy) He had me go through E Bay & provided FSN # 2920-00-116-8399 for my Leece Neville 3002AD. When I pulled the back cover off the first task was to check & see if all five wires were adequately labeled & to see if the numbers on wires matched numbers on reg. circuit board. #' s one & two on the wires were iffy but looked like would be ok . Yes I know I should have put new #'s on wires but hindsight is 20/20! In the process of R&R either # one or two fell off (5-4-3 are good) I really can't tell if it is a one or a two on the remaining wire ; sort of looks like a 1. One of these goes to a brush & the other to the IGN. lead on the external connection block. In summary does # 1 on the reg. circuit board go to a brush or the IGN lead & same question for # 2 THANKS for your help

update: A younger pair of eyes looked at the number tags on the wires & agreed that the wire I thought to be # 1 was #1 so logically the un-tagged wire had to be # 2 ! The icing on the cake was we found the tag that fell off & again the young eyeballs said that was a # 2 on it so now 99.999% certain that is good! The external terminal block ( my jargon) had the ign wire in bad condition because there is no strain relief & only 5 or 6 individual strands were still
good. I chose the easy way out of removing the block for repair; I cut white wire that went to AC threaded terminal , cut black wire that went to waterproof plug (IGN.) & the B+ was a short wire that went to a threaded stud on the rectifier bank. drilled out old ign. wire & glued in a short piece with liquid tape. installed block & used solder & heat shrink to rejoin the cut wires. finished assembly with the N.O.S. 2920-00-116-8399 regulator from Southern automotive & the test drive was good!!! Because the fault didn't occur 100% of time won't be certain till a few more runs.
I have downloaded & printed off TM 9-2920-225-34 & 34P neither one of them had a internal schematic for the alt.
what is the A.C. threaded terminal for on the block? the charging sys. trouble shooting doesn't mention this terminal. study the waveform on a scope?
